GreenFields of Geneva Resident Golf Duo Hit The Links

GreenField resident in Independent Living takes Memory Care resident golfing and friendship formed.

When Joyce Wong’s husband, who was her golf partner of many decades was sidelined by health issues, she assumed her own golfing days were a thing of the past. Joyce and her husband George were avid golfers for many decades. “Our home had been on the fourth green of a golf course. We even owned a golf cart,” said George. “Joyce was in a couple of leagues and we played a lot. Two or three times per week.”

George stopped being able to golf three years ago and the couple moved to assisted living at GreenFields of Geneva shortly thereafter. Joyce, who has increasing memory issues, has since moved into Reflections Memory Support at GreenFields.

Her beloved hobby was resurrected by fellow-GreenFields resident Rainy Abbott.

“Bob Knott who is in charge of GreenFields’ golf group, told me there is a delightful lady in memory care, who would love to be golfing. He asked if I’d mind picking her up and taking her to the course. I said I’d love to,” said Rainy. “I went to visit Joyce and George, and a lively golf discussion ensued.”

“It was an unbelievable turn of events. We had so many things in common, in terms of golfing and courses that we’ve played, “ said George about the visit.

Rainy moved to GreenFields almost a year ago. A golfer since the age of eight, Rainy formerly played competitively, and also served as the Director of Education for the National Golf Association. The beautiful golf courses adjacent to GreenFields were “icing on the cake” when Rainy decided to move to the retirement community.

Rainy and Joyce have become fast pals and team up for GreenFields’ golf group’s weekly nine-hole scramble. They are, thus far, the only two women in the group. They also occasionally have meals and visit together.

“I was kind of surprised and happy to know that I’d be able to do this,” said Joyce. “I’m so glad to be able to resume a sport that I really loved.
