Major Delays Expected As IL 53 Improvements Resume In Northwest Suburbs: IDOT

The work stretches from Lake Cook Road to Interstate 90 in Rolling Meadows, Palatine and Arlington Heights.

NORTHWEST SUBURBS, IL — A project to improve Illinois 53 from Lake Cook Road to Interstate 90 in Rolling Meadows, Palatine, and Arlington Heights has resumed this week, weather permitting, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The agency said the project is part of a larger $189 million initiative to reconstruct and resurface Illinois 53 and modernize traffic signals, lighting, and drainage.

Work for this year includes rehabilitating bridges at Kirchoff Road, Industrial Avenue, Northwest Highway, and Palatine Road. Milling and resurfacing were completed last year as part of the multi-stage project. The majority of the overall project is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, with landscaping and miscellaneous work expected in spring 2027.

To accommodate the work, lane closures are scheduled for both directions of Illinois 53 between Kirchoff and Rand roads. Motorists should also expect lane shifts, with two lanes open in each direction, along with various ramp and overnight lane closures throughout the construction period. The public can anticipate delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area.

Several ramps will experience closures. The westbound Euclid Avenue to southbound Illinois 53 ramp and eastbound Euclid Avenue to northbound Illinois 53 ramp are closed until late April for pier demolition and construction. Detours will be in place for these closures. Additionally, ramps at Palatine Road are scheduled to close Friday, March 6, and are expected to reopen in late summer. These include eastbound Palatine Road to northbound Illinois 53, westbound Palatine Road to southbound Illinois 53, southbound Illinois 53 to eastbound Palatine Road, and northbound Illinois 53 to westbound Palatine Road.

The northbound Illinois 53 ramp to Algonquin Road is scheduled to close Friday, March 13, until late summer. Additional ramp and lane closures of varying durations will be necessary to complete the project. Schedules and traffic impacts will be shared closer to the closure dates. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes, pay attention to flaggers and signs in work zones, and obey posted speed limits.
