Man Faces Gun Charges After Fleeing Elk Grove Village Traffic Stop: Police

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — A 22-year-old Elk Grove Village man faces multiple felony gun charges after police said he fled on foot during a traffic stop and was later located with help from a police K-9.

Torion Stokes was taken into custody July 31 following a search near Huntington Drive, according to the Elk Grove Village Police Department.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved 11 charges against Stokes, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Stokes was ordered detained during an Aug. 3 hearing at the Cook County Criminal Court Building in Chicago. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 17.

Police Say Driver Ran During Stop

Officers stopped a vehicle near Rohlwing and Biesterfield roads at about 4:16 p.m. after seeing the driver disregard a stop sign, police said.

During the stop, officers allegedly smelled cannabis and saw an open container of alcohol in the passenger compartment.

Police removed the driver and passenger from the vehicle while continuing their investigation. During questioning, Stokes allegedly ran from officers.

Some officers pursued him while others remained with the passenger, according to the department.

A police K-9 later helped officers find Stokes in the 1000 block of Huntington Drive at about 6:43 p.m., more than two hours after the traffic stop began.

The passenger was released without charges.

Felony And Misdemeanor Charges

Stokes was charged with:

• Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon without a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card, a Class 2 felony
• Unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 2 felony
• Possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, a Class 3 felony
• Possession of ammunition without a valid FOID card, a Class A misdemeanor
• Resisting or obstructing a peace officer, a Class A misdemeanor
• Unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, a Class A misdemeanor
• Driving without ever having been issued a license, a Class B misdemeanor
• Disregarding a stop sign
• Operating a vehicle with a defective windshield
• Unlawful transportation of alcohol by a driver
• Operating an uninsured vehicle

The department said the weapon-possession charge also involved an alleged parole violation.

Several Departments Assisted

Police thanked residents near Huntington Drive for their patience during the search.

Officers from Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Bensenville, Wood Dale, Addison, Rolling Meadows and Mount Prospect helped establish a perimeter around the area, according to Elk Grove Village police.

The charges are accusations. Stokes is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
