Man Wounds Ex-Girlfriend, Fatally Shoots Self: Mount Prospect PD
The 53-year-old Wisconsin man confronted the Mount Prospect woman, whom he had previously been dating, Monday at her home.
MOUNT PROSPECT, IL — A Wisconsin man shot and wounded an ex-girlfriend Monday before fatally shooting himself. According to Mount Prospect police, the 63-year-old woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds, but was able to tell police what had occurred.
Police said the two had been dating, but the relationship had ended in the last few months.
Police responded to a third-party 911 call regarding a shooting in the garage of a condominium building in the 1200 block of west Northwest Highway. Upon arrival, officers gained entry to the building and garage and found both a conscious female and an unconscious male who had sustained gunshot wounds.

Mount Prospect Fire Department paramedics took both people to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Officers were able to determine that no other individuals were involved or injured. The woman was awake and able to speak with detectives while at the hospital. The man, identified as Michael Work, 53, of Shorewood, Wisconsin, later succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead while at the hospital.
The initial investigation revealed that the woman arrived at the condominium building at around 4:45 pm and pulled her vehicle into the secured garage. While the garage door was still open, Work drove his vehicle into the garage, following behind the victim’s vehicle. As the victim was attempting to park her vehicle, Work drove toward and struck the driver's side of the victim's vehicle. Work then exited his vehicle and began shooting at the victim's vehicle multiple times. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Work shot himself outside his own vehicle.

The crime scene was processed by the Major Case Assistance Team's Forensic Unit. A handgun was found at the scene near where Work was found in the garage.
