Rep. Tammy Duckworth is Pregnant, Expecting Girl in December

Duckworth’s announcement was made on the same day The Today Show aired an interview featuring the freshman congresswoman and three other woman who were wounded during the Iraq War and who are now expecting, or have recently had, children.

“I am so thrilled that I am going to be a mother in just four months,” Duckworth said during the Today interview.
Duckworth, 46, said during the Today Show interview that she used in vitro fertilization to help her get pregnant. Her pregnancy is considered high risk due to her age and since she has high blood pressure, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Duckworth lost both of her legs and injured her arm after the Black Hawk helicopter she was flying was shot down in Iraq in 2004 while Melissa Stockwell of Chicago, who was also featured on the Today Show, lost most of her left leg to a roadside bomb in Baghdad in 2004, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Stockwell is now expecting a baby boy in late November.
Danielle Green-Byrd of Chicago and Dawn Halfaker both lost their arms during the Iraq War. Green-Byrd gave birth to her son 10 days ago while Halfaker had her son 4 months ago, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The group is referring to themselves as “The Band of Mothers” and planning future play dates for all of their children, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“These women were there for me as the band of sisters when I went through the greatest pain, the greatest trauma in my life,” Duckworth said during the Today Show interview. “And now we get to be together during the time of greatest joy.”
