Shelter Youth & Family Services To Honor Sheriff At Annual Gala

The 2026 event will raise funds for regional youth services and recognize Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart for his anti-trafficking efforts.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Shelter Youth & Family Services is preparing for its next month's annual gala, titled "Where Dreams Begin." The event will be held April 10 at the Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling.

The Arlington Heights-based nonprofit organization has served the community for more than 50 years. It provides emergency shelter, foster care, and trauma-informed therapy to children and families in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Last year, according to Shelter, the agency provided services to more than 660 youth and families. Officials report the organization is on track to exceed that number this year.

Organizers said the gala serves as a fundraiser to support children and families facing abuse, neglect, and crisis.

"'Where Dreams Begin' is more than an event — it reflects what happens every day at Shelter," said Carina H. Santa Maria, CEO of Shelter Youth & Family Services. "When a child feels safe, supported, and believed in, that is the moment everything changes. Our 2026 gala fuels not only immediate safety, but long-term stability and opportunity for children and families across our region."

The evening will include live entertainment from Felix & Fingers Dueling Pianos along with silent and live auctions. Regina Waldroup, of NBC 5 Chicago, will return as the master of ceremonies.

During the program, the organization will present the annual Buckholz Award to Dart. The award recognizes his leadership in the fight against human trafficking, according to Shelter.

Proceeds from the event support programs that ensure safe housing and access to trauma-informed care. The funding also helps families access resources needed to prevent abuse and crisis.

Founded in 1975, Shelter provides a wide range of services including transitional living and clinical support. It remains the only agency in Illinois offering this specific continuum of care for at-risk youth. Members of the community and local businesses are invited to attend or sponsor the event. Tickets and sponsorship details are available on the Shelter website.
