Suicidal Person Barricades Self In Vehicle: Des Plaines PD

Firefighters performed life-saving measures at the scene of the Sunday morning incident.

DES PLAINES, IL — A suicidal person sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a Sunday morning incident in which they barricaded themselves in a car. Police were called to the intersection of Touhy Avenue and Lee Street at 7:20 a.m. for a report of a suicidal person in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, police made contact with the person by cellphone and learned they were armed with a handgun. The Des Plaines Tactical Response Team was called to the scene for the protection of the community due to the location of the vehicle.

Police said they were able to maintain an open line of communication with the person. After making multiple attempts to reach a safe resolution, the person terminated cellphone communication and a single gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle. It was later determined to be self-inflicted.

Firefighters on scene began performing life-saving measures before taking the person to a local hospital.

Police said the incident remains under investigation and more information will be released when made available.
