Suspects With Apparent Guns Target Parked Vehicles: Mount Prospect PD

MOUNT PROSPECT, IL — A masked group carrying what appeared to be handguns was captured on home security cameras entering a pickup truck and trying to open locked vehicles early Wednesday, according to Mount Prospect police.

The department is investigating three reports involving vehicles parked in driveways in the 1700 block of Mura Lane and the 1900 block of Seneca Lane. Police announced plans for an increased presence in the area and urged residents to call 911 rather than confront anyone breaking into a vehicle.

Officers responded to the Mura Lane home around 7:30 a.m. Oct. 14, after a resident discovered items had been moved inside his Ram 1500 pickup. The glovebox and center console were open, but nothing appeared to be missing.

The resident reviewed security footage showing a vehicle stopping outside his home around 1:17 a.m. Three people got out, and one approached the pickup while holding what appeared to be a handgun, investigators said. That person entered the truck and left a short time later.

Later Wednesday, officers took two additional reports on Seneca Lane. Security footage from those homes showed a masked group pulling on vehicle door handles around 1:08 a.m. They were unable to enter the locked vehicles.

Those videos also showed the suspects holding what appeared to be handguns, according to the department.

The person who entered the pickup on Mura Lane was described as male, wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, light-colored sweatpants and white shoes.

One suspect seen on Seneca Lane was described as male, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. Another was described as male, wearing a dark jacket and dark pants, both with light-colored accents on the front.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Mount Prospect Police Department’s Investigations Section at 847-870-5654.

Police urged anyone who sees a vehicle break-in to get to a safe location and call 911 immediately.
