Teen Charged With Attempted Murder Following Shooting: Mt Prospect PD

The accused in the Wednesday incident is a known gang member, according to police.

MOUNT PROSPECT, IL — A teenager is being charged with five felonies, including attempted murder, following a gang-related shooting Wednesday. The 16-year-old was arrested Thursday and is currently at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago.

Charged through the Juvenile Justice Division and the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, the teenager is accused of the following felony crimes:

  • Attempted first degree murder
  • Aggravated discharged of a firearm
  • Possession of a defaced firearm
  • Unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member
  • Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon

Police responded to the 1800 block of Hatherleigh Court at around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday for 911 reports of shots fired. Witnesses told 911 dispatchers that two male teenagers wearing hooded sweatshirts were seen running from the area.

Upon arrival at the scene, police found an uninjured victim who was shot at by one of the teenagers, along with other witnesses, as well as multiple shell casings from a handgun.

Witnesses told police two male Hispanic teenagers — one wearing a black-colored hooded sweatshirt and one wearing a gray-colored sweatshirt — in the area. One reportedly yelled, "I'm going to kill you," followed by multiple gunshots being fired. The two fled the area on foot to the west.

Police located a person matching the description walking near an apartment complex in the 1900 block of West Algonquin Road. The person, a known gang member, ran from the officer. The officer gave chase and was able to apprehend the teenager and take him into custody. A handgun, with a removed serial number, was also recovered.

The other suspect is described as a Hispanic male teenager, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and white colored shoes. Police said the investigation into this incident is still open and ongoing to identify and locate the second teenager.
