Police are asking residents to take precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of their pets.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — With an uptick in coyote sightings reported in the area, Arlington Heights police are reminding residents to stay informed and take precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of their pets.

Noting coyotes are a natural part of our ecosystem, police released a list of things to do:

• Keep pets indoors, especially at night.
• Secure trash cans and food sources.
• Be cautious when walking pets outside and keep them on a leash.
• If you encounter a coyote, do not approach. Make noise and back away slowly.
