White Mount Prospect Woman Accused of Harassing Black Family Apologizes and Pays Up

The settlement ends a lawsuit neighbors filed against Terry Calliari that alleged she used racial slurs and other intimidation tactics.

MOUNT PROSPECT, IL — A white Mount Prospect resident accused of years of continual race-based harassment of her African-American neighbors has reached an out-of-court settlement with that family, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Terry Calliari agreed to pay an undisclosed amount of money and apologize to Iris Howe and her two adult children—Sidney Powell and Samuel Mobley—after a civil lawsuit they brought against Calliari claimed she taunted them with racial slurs and used other tactics to intimidate the family for about five years, the report states.

Details surrounding the agreement were not revealed, but a lawyer for Powell and her family—who lived across the street from Calliari but have since moved—told the Tribune the financial terms are substantial. Calliari also apologized to the family in court but admitted no wrongdoing, the report added.

Along with the verbal harassment, the lawsuit, which was filed in 2014 in Cook County, accused Calliari of using her car to block the family and made attempts to stop them from using the neighborhood pool, the report stated.
