Windsor School and PTA Host Annual Veterans Breakfast

43 Veterans are honored with their families before school for a Veterans Breakfast.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL- Windsor School PTA invited students to bring a Veteran to a special breakfast on Veteran’s Day to honor them, many of them for the first time. The Veteran’s Breakfast has grown over the years, but this year is the largest one yet, with 43 Veterans honored. The very first breakfast, held eight years ago, honored 12 veterans.

The Veteran’s Breakfast is a true collaborative effort between the PTA, community groups, and Windsor School. The Windsor staff has provided time for all students to write letters to the Veteran’s, which were presented to each Veteran along with a certificate of appreciation signed by District Administrators. The students in the AHPD C.A.P. program made placemats, the Windsor Girl Scouts created centerpieces and other decorations, the Windsor Cub Scouts presented the colors during the Flag Ceremony, and 4th graders performed patriotic songs under the direction of their music teacher Mrs. Camille Ziemann.

After a breakfast of omelets, breakfast potatoes, sausage, bagels, donuts, and yogurt with juice or coffee to drink, the Veterans visited with their families before being recognized on the morning announcements. After the announcements, a special parade took place; all students and staff exit their classrooms to enter the hallways and wave flags to salute the honored guests as they walk the hallways and exit the building.

The PTA collected names of Veterans in September and sent them personalized invitations in October. The committee and it’s volunteers served over 150 guests before school on Veteran’s Day, November 11th, 2015. Many Arlington Heights School District Administrators were in attendance. This year, some of the Veteran’s commented that this was the first time they were ever honored and they appreciated all of the special touches of the day. The honored guests represent the National Guard, the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Marines and span many years of service.

The Veteran’s Breakfast is a special day for the Veterans and their family members. “This is one of the highlights of our school year as we celebrate veterans in our community. It is a truly touching event that we talk about long after the breakfast”, said Mrs. Fabrizio, principal of Windsor School. The Windsor PTA and Windsor School staff are honored to serve the Veterans and to honor them in this special way. For more information or to become a PTA member at Windsor visit, www.windsorpta.org.
