AURORA, IL — A 16-year-old boy with known gang affiliations was taken into custody April 19 after Aurora police recovered a loaded handgun after he led police on an electric scooter chase, officials said Wednesday.
Police said Special Operations Group investigators saw the teenager illegally riding an electric scooter in the road near Front Street and Jefferson Street at about 6:36 p.m. When police attempted to speak with the boy, he fled on the scooter, then abandoned it and ran away on foot, according to a news release.
Police pursued the teen through nearby residential areas and parking lots before taking him into custody without incident, officials said. Illinois law prohibits electric scooters to be riden on streets with speed limits over 35 mph. Riders must also be at least 18 years old.
During a search following the boy's arrest, police found a loaded black Glock 19, a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, in a crossbody bag. The gun contained a magazine loaded with 13 rounds of ammunition, officials said.
The teen was charged with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a felony, and one count of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
Police said they will not share any additional identifying information since the suspect is a minor.
"This arrest reflects the proactive work our officers do every day to identify threats, act quickly, and keep illegal firearms off our streets," Chief Matt Thomas said in a statement. "When someone chooses to flee from police while carrying a loaded weapon, it creates unnecessary danger for everyone around them. We remain committed to protecting our neighborhoods through focused enforcement and accountability."
