AURORA, IL — Alley Art Festival, the popular grassroots event that has brought together local artists once a year for more than a decade, will occur for the final time Aug. 29.

Established in 2010 by Marissa Amoni, Jenn Byrne, Lisa Gloria and Nate Miller, the festival has focused on showcasing only artists residing within 30 miles of Aurora.

In its final rendition, the free festival will once again feature art, jewelry, pottery, handmade goods and more on Water Street Mall and Downer Place between Stolp Avenue and Water Street.

"I'm proud of the role it has played in boosting the arts community and downtown development over the years. It’s been a big, beautiful day," Event Director Marissa Amoni said in a statement. "It feels like the time is right for something else to grow in its place."

In a news release, Amoni stated that although Alley Art Festival, as an outdoor event, is coming to an end, it will continue as her business, with objectives including promoting the arts and offering classes.

Alley Art Festival recently held a collage card-making class at Yellow Bird Books and took part in First Fridays at Santori Public Library by hosting a hands-on art activity.

"By scaling back and offering more intimate community art opportunities and connections, Alley Art Festival can hopefully be more impactful on a personal level with community members," Amoni said.

The final Alley Arts Festival, its 16th anniversary, will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 29. Artists have until May 1 to apply to participate.
