Aurora Public Art Debuts Exhibit Exploring Freedom, Community Identity

AURORA, IL — Aurora Public Art is debuting its summer exhibit Friday night.

"Unfinished Independence," running through July 24, brings together a roster of established artists, emerging voices, educational groups and community collectives.

Painting, sculpture, mixed media and collaborative installations are the mediums included in the exhibit. Together, they're meant to serve as a forum for dialogue about freedom, community identity, liberty and self-determination.

"Independence is not a static moment frozen in a historical document; it is an active, evolving, and often turbulent process," Curator Sangeeta Pande said in a statement. "This exhibition confronts the reality that for many communities, the promises of liberation and equity remain unfulfilled or in progress. By juxtaposing elite fine artists with veteran artisans and student voices, the gallery space mirrors the grand, messy democratic experiment itself. Each piece functions as an invitation to witness where our collective independence stands today and what must still be built for tomorrow."

Featured exhibiting artists and collectives include Steve Sherrel, Tina S. Smith, Jeanine Hill-Soldner, Perry Slade, Garrick Gillete, Chris Hodge, Steve Kost, Al Scott, Greg Zilioli, Jay Reed, CJ Hungerman, Cesar Conde, Dominic Sansone, Colin Sherrel, Jeffrey Equality Brooks, Thomas Mahady, Anton Witek, Grahame Wilkin, Nitu Kushwaha, Mark Adams, Marisol Maravilla, Varun Vassireddy, Sanai Reign, Carlos Martinez Fernandez, Aurora Christian art students, A Call to Shoulders veteran artisans, and OLI Gardens Artwork.

To celebrate the opening, the gallery is hosting a reception from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Guests will have the opportunity to meet several participating artists and enjoy light refreshments.

Aurora Public Art, at 20 E. Downer Place, is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
