AURORA, IL — Three single-family homes caught fire within a 24-hour stretch over the weekend in Aurora, the fire department said Monday.
Firefighters responded to three second-alarm structure fires on Greenlake Drive, South Fourth Street and Zengele Avenue, with all incidents involving active fires, displaced residents and extensive operations, officials said.
The first fire was reported at 1:55 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of Greenlake Drive. Crews arrived at the 2.5-story house to find a fire on the roof. All residents safely evacuated, but the home was deemed uninhabitable, displacing four adults, according to a news release. No injuries were reported.
The second fire occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of South Fourth Street. The attic area of the 2.5-story home was ablaze, and the first crews to arrive brought it under control by advancing a hose line to the top floor.
Two cats were rescued from the house, and 11 residents were displaced, officials said. No injuries were reported.
Later on Sunday, at about 9:41 a.m., the report of the third fire came in. Firefighters were dispatched to a two-story house in the 200 block of Zengele Avenue to find significant fire conditions on the front side of the structure.
One resident was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and one firefighter was admitted to be evaluated for a minor injury, officials said. One adult was displaced as a result of the home being deemed uninhabitable.
"Responding to three separate second-alarm fires in less than 24 hours is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our firefighters," Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel said in a statement. "In each incident, crews faced unique challenges, worked quickly to protect lives and property, and prevented further damage through coordinated fireground operations."
The three fires remain under investigation by Aurora Fire Department investigators, officials said.
