AURORA, IL — Illinois's second-largest city has been deemed one of the top places to bike in the state, according to a new ranking.
PeopleForBikes, a nonprofit cycling organization, released its annual City Rankings, deeming Aurora the second-best place to bike in Illinois and 215th in the country.
Aurora has 116 miles of bicycle facilities and 760 miles of sidewalks, and this city map details off-road trails and suggested on-road routes throughout the city.
Bethalto, located about 30 miles northeast of St. Louis, ranked the highest in Illinois.
Mackinac Island, Michigan, and Old Orchard, Pennsylvania, tied for first place in the country, while Crested Butte, Colorado came in third place. All three received perfect scores of 100.
The City Rankings measure the quality of a city's bike network using results from the nonprofit's Bicycle Network Analysis, which assesses six factors —safe speeds, protected bike lanes, reallocated space, intersection treatments, network connections and trusted data.
Each city receives a score between 0 and 100, with a low score (0-20) indicating a weak bike network, and a high score (80-100) meaning that most common destinations are accessible by safe and comfortable bike routes that serve people of all ages and abilities. Aurora received a score of 58, while Bethalto scored 62.
