AURORA, IL — A grill caught fire Aug. 20 and extended to part of the roof of a house in the 2400 block of Thurston Court in Aurora, officials said.
While crews were en route to the two-story, single-family home, residents reported they tried to extinguish the grill fire with a portable extinguisher but couldn't. Upon arrival, firefighters determined the fire had extended from the deck to the house and upgraded to a second alarm, bringing a total of 24 crews to the scene, according to a Friday news release.
The first crews to arrive found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the house and confirmed the fire extending into the soffit area. Firefighters deployed hose lines and worked to contain the fire while conducting searches and checking the attic for extension.
Firefighters contained the flames before they could extend into the house, officials said.
No one was injured in the fire, and the house remained habitable.
"This incident is an important reminder of how quickly an outdoor fire can spread to a home," Interim Fire Chief Kevin Nickel said in a statement. "Keep grills a safe distance from your house, deck railings, and other combustible materials, and never leave a grill unattended while it is in use."
