AURORA, IL — Aurora police recovered "thousands of pills" and illicit drugs in a recent search warrant, leading to seven felony drug charges for a 33-year-old Aurora man.

Officers responded at 5:14 p.m. Oct. 14 to the 400 block of South Lincoln Avenue after a 911 call came in reporting a residential burglary in progress. Witnesses said they saw two people enter a residence and leave with several bags before fleeing in a car, according to a Tuesday news release.

At the residence, police saw signs of forced entry and conducted a protective sweep of the home to ensure no one needed help. During the sweep, they saw "a large bag containing suspected cannabis, along with numerous pills, in plain view," officials said. Officers contacted investigators with the department's Special Operations Group, who obtained a search warrant to investigate the drug activity, the release stated.

During the investigation, Mickey Stewart Jr., 33, returned and was subsequently taken into custody. Police also recovered suspected controlled substances that he was carrying, police said.

At around 8:50 p.m. that Wednesday evening, investigators executed a search warrant and recovered the following drugs in addition to $2,624, digital scales and packaging materials.

The Kane County State's Attorney's Office approved the following charges against Stewart:

Stewart remains in custody at the Kane County jail. His next court date is set for Thursday.

The investigation into the reported residential burglary remains ongoing, police said.

"This investigation is a good example of how our officers remain alert to criminal activity beyond the initial call for service," Chief Matt Thomas said in a statement. "What began as a response to a reported burglary led to the recovery of a significant quantity of suspected illegal drugs, including thousands of pills. This seizure represents drugs that are no longer available for distribution in our community, and that's an important part of our ongoing efforts to keep Aurora safe."
