AURORA, IL — A family of five was displaced Sunday from their residence in the 500 block of New Haven Avenue after a bathroom utility closet caught fire, leading to a separate hidden fire, officials said.
The incident was one of two the Aurora Fire Department responded to over the weekend.
The first occurred Saturday afternoon. The first report came in at 4:44 p.m. Oct. 25. A total of 13 personnel responded at 4:44 p.m. to a property in the 900 block of Gleason Avenue to find the detached garage on fire, according to a news release.
The first-arriving crews deployed a hose line to extinguish the fire in less than one minute, preventing the flames from spreading into the interior of the garage, officials said.
No one was home at the time of the garage fire. The house remained habitable.
The next morning, at 7:46 a.m., firefighters responded to a single-family home to find smoke coming from the roof and eaves. A total of 24 personnel responded and worked to bring the fire in a bathroom utility closet under control within 11 minutes, officials said.
While overhauling the property, crews found a hidden fire, including smoldering materials around the furnace and chimney chase, according to a release.
All residents safely evacuated. The house was deemed uninhabitable due to fire damage, displacing two adults and three children, officials said.
