2 Batavia D101 Board Members Resign On Same Day

Two members tendered their resignations May 18, citing difficulties with the Board.

BATAVIA, IL — Two members on the Batavia Public School District 101 Board of Education have tendered their resignations.

Katy Swiecicki and Danielle Sligar stepped down from the Board, effective immediately, officials announced Wednesday. In their respective resignation letters, both cited difficulties in communication.

Swiecicki, who was sworn in on April 22, 2025, said she resigned from her role as board secretary due to her "inability to get items on agendas for discussion, answers to community questions and concerns, and in the absence of seeking my feedback and perspective on issues before this board."

"I do not feel I can fulfill the duties assigned to me by our policy and the IASB as this board currently operates," she wrote.

Sligar, who officially joined as a member on April 25, 2023, shared similar sentiments.

"Unfortunately, the breakdown in communication, transparency, and ability to hold open board conversations has made freely advocating for our community’s voices and experiences an excessively difficult task month after month," she wrote in her resignation letter. "Due to this, I am no longer able to dedicate the necessary time and energy to fulfill my duties effectively."

Sligar added, "I am proud of the progress I contributed to in holding difficult discussions, attempts to center the most vulnerable in our district, and most recently, adding student board members to our board. I believe the greatest opportunity for this board lies in updating its procedures to better serve as a trusted steward for the community through curiosity, transparency, and communication- instead of simply aligning with or affirming the ideals of administration."

Both letters were dated May 18.

In a statement to Patch, Board President Craig Meadows noted District 101 remains committed to transparency.

"Public service often brings differing perspectives and difficult conversations," he said. "While we may not always agree, Batavia Public School District 101 remains committed to transparent, responsive, and evidence-based governance that keeps the needs of all students at the center of our work."

District 101 officials said they will soon begin the process of filling the vacant seats.

"Community members interested in serving on the Board of Education are encouraged to consider applying once details are announced," officials wrote in a news release.
