Batavia Begins Exterior Assessment Of 75 Historic Properties

BATAVIA, IL — Batavia is set to begin in late July an assessment of the exterior condition of about 75 historic buildings in the downtown area.

The Chicago-based JLK Architects will oversee the assessment to identify maintenance concerns and gather information to guide Batavia's future preservation efforts. The project is included in the city's 2026 budget.

"This assessment provides the City with a complete and consistent inventory of exterior building conditions for our most historically significant buildings throughout the City's Historic District," Scott Buening, community and economic development director, said in a statement. "The information gathered will help us better understand current building conditions, identify maintenance needs, and support long-term preservation planning for one of Batavia's most important community assets."

The project includes a second phase to evaluate other properties, including the Campana Building, Batavia's only locally designated landmark.

Field work is scheduled to continue through August. Consultants will evaluate visible exterior building elements, including roofs, chimneys, drainage systems, exterior walls and masonry, windows, doors, foundations, porches, steps and railings.

Most assessments will be completed from public right-of-ways. If there is limited visibility, city staff and architects will coordinate with the building owner before entering private property.
