About the piece:

The Navajo are known for their weaving. Traditional Navajo rugs make use of symbolic, geometric patterns. This contemporary example from Navajo artist DY Begay, however, is more abstract - but still steeped in meaning.

Begay explains on her website: "Black has many references in Navajo ceremonies. The color black is sacred because it is associated with the direction North. The color black is also associated with the origin of all things."

To see Night Way in person, come see WOVEN: The Art of Contemporary Native Weaving, on display at the Schingoethe Center of Aurora University until Friday, December 16.
