Batavia PD Charge Man With DUI In County Memorial Day Campaign

BATAVIA, IL — During the Kane County State's Attorney's Office Memorial Day "no-refusal operation," Batavia police arrested and charged one man with driving under the influence of alcohol, officials said Wednesday.

The man, of West Chicago, was one of three people arrested during the campaign, which involved nine police agencies and lasted from 8 p.m. to midnight on May 30. The other two people, of Elgin, were arrested and charged in Elgin and St. Charles, according to the state's attorney's office.

During the evening operation, Aurora, Batavia, Carpentersville, Elgin, Geneva, Illinois State Police District 15, St. Charles, South Elgin and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office gathered to stop and arrest suspected intoxicated drivers. Officials said they brought the individuals — ages 28, 29 and 39 — to the respective police stations, where they submitted to Breathalyzer or other chemical testing.

The following people were arrested and charged with driving under the influence May 30:

• Jose L. Barrerea-Munoz, 39, of West Chicago. Charged with two counts of DUI and a traffic offense. His next court appearance is set for July 20.
• Lirio P. Hernandez-Camacho, 28, of Elgin. Charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting/obstructing a police officer causing injury, DUI, resisting/obstructing a police officer, and endangering children. His next court appearance is set for June 24.
• Sean W. Howell, 29, of Elgin. Charged with two counts of DUI and a traffic offense. His next court appearance is set for July 20.

Of the men charged, officials said the highest blood-alcohol concentration was .200 percent.

"The No-Refusal initiatives are about road safety because every DUI is preventable," State's Attorney Jamie Mosser said in a statement. "There are plenty of ways to get home that do not involve getting behind the wheel of a car while impaired."

Mosser also thanked several officials for arranging the campaign and giving up their holiday to "hold these individuals accountable for their bad decision."
