Batavia Stabbing: Suspect In Police Custody

BATAVIA, IL — Batavia police say a man who allegedly stabbed another man following an altercation at Steak 'n Shake is now in custody. Jose E. Santiago, 20, of the 400 block of Walnut Avenue, St. Charles is accused of stabbing and threatening to kill another customer on Aug. 3.

Santiago was taken into custody at 10 a.m. Tuesday without incident, according to police.

The victim told police he was in the drive-thru at Steak 'n Shake, 1901 McKee St., at around 11 p.m. when an altercation began between him and Santiago. After this "verbal and minor physical" altercation, a female driving the car Santiago was in allegedly backed into the victim's car and drove off.

Police say the victim then drove east on McKee and then spotted the car Santiago was in. The victim told police he stopped in the first block of Willey Lane to allow Santiago's car to pass, but that the driver pulled in front of his car and Santiago got out.

According to police, Santiago then stabbed the victim in the left shoulder and left lower back, threatening to kill him. Santiago allegedly fled after the victim threatened to call police.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, treated, and released.

Santiago has been charged with felony counts of armed violence, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, and aggravated battery in a public place.
