Batavia VFW To Host July 4 Children’s Parade

The Batavia Overseas VFW Post 1197 is set to open up its 6-acre property Saturday for a small parade to celebrate Independence Day.

BATAVIA, IL — With Independence Day celebrations throughout the region canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Batavia VFW veterans are set to open up their 6-acre property July 4 for a children’s parade, according to a report by the Daily Herald. Children will start their march around the property at 10:30 a.m., with parents invited to join in, the report states.

Jay Davis, post commander of the Batavia Overseas VFW Post 1197, told the Daily Herald a Batavia fire vehicle will lead the socially distanced parade around the property. Food, snacks and drinks will be available to buy at the parade, though kids 8 and under will eat for free, the report states.

Davis said he organized the parade "to give the kids a sense of normalcy" after Batavia officials canceled the city’s annual Fireworks Sky Concert to mark Independence Day due to safety concerns amid the pandemic. Communities throughout Kane County and beyond have also called off their July 4 festivities, leaving Batavia residents with little way to celebrate publicly.

Anyone who wants to join in the parade should be at the Batavia VFW property, located at 645 S. River St., by 10 a.m., the report states.
