Benefits of Adopting an Adult Dog

In a word, Loyalty!

Safe Haven Dog Rescue has several adult and “teen” dogs in our program that are looking for their forever families. We are not a rescue that will only rescue puppies or cute, fluffy dogs, we are a true RESCUE. We always bring the mother (and father if known) of the puppies we rescue. We also take in adults whenever we can because we know that the chances of them making it out of the shelter is not always good.

Everyone knows that puppies are cute, but adult and teen dogs are amazing! Most adult and teen dogs that are available for adoption are not “someone else’s problem dog”, they are loving, smart, dogs that found themselves homeless through no fault of their own. Adult dogs are often overlooked, simply because they are not puppies!

There are a multitude of benefits to choosing an adult:

They are past the sharp puppy teeth stage (which hurt!). And with adult teeth, the chances that they chew things they shouldn’t, diminishes.

Adult dogs are often housetrained, and even if they aren’t, they are generally much easier to train because they have the ability to “hold it” for much longer than a puppy. Anyone that has adopted a puppy knows about those awful trips outside in the middle of the night!

With an adult dog, you already know how big they will get and what type of fur they will have…so no guessing on size or grooming needed. You can also see their personality now…rather than waiting to see how it develops.

Adult and teen dogs are easier to train than puppies. They are calmer and can focus easier than puppies, and chances are, they already have experience with learning commands, making continued training easier.

If you are a runner, an adult dog can be a ready-made exercise partner. No waiting months until your puppy can take that jog with you.

Most important of all, adult dogs are often overlooked, and when they find their forever family they are eternally grateful and demonstrate this by being extremely loyal and loving companions.
