The Batavia Police Department is continuing to field reports of burglaries to motor vehicles.

BATAVIA, IL -- Burglary crews from Chicago could be to blame for a rash of motor vehicle burglaries reported in Batavia and throughout the suburbs in recent weeks, authorities said Wednesday. The Batavia Police Department continues to receive reports of burglaries to unlocked cars in recent days and is again encouraging residents to be sure to lock their vehicles. Residents are also encouraged to remove any valuables, car and house keys and garage door openers from their vehicles, according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department.
Police said the burglaries continue to happen during the overnight hours and in residential areas throughout the city.
In a statement Tuesday, police said a small percentage of property stolen from vehicles has been recovered in the city of Chicago.

"It is likely that burglary crews from Chicago have been targeting cities in the suburbs along the expressway corridor," including Batavia, according to the news release.
Thieves have also stolen unlocked parked vehicles after the keys were left inside, police said. In addition, garage door openers left inside the vehicles have been used by burglars to gain access to the homes. They will then enter and steal items from the residence, according to the news release.
