Batavia High School grads earn dean’s list recognition

Zach Mieszala and Jake Mangers, both graduates of Batavia High School, were named to the Iowa State University dean’s list for the fall 2021 semester. Mieszala and Mangers are both studying business at the university.

Jonathan Hess inducted into Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Jonathan Hess of Batavia, Illinois, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Hess was initiated at Iowa State University.

Hess is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

BHS graduate earns Dean's Award with Distinction at Colgate University

Geddy Rerko, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2023, has earned the Fall 2021 Dean's Award with Distinction.

Rerko is a Biology major from Batavia, IL (60510), and is a graduate of Batavia High School.

Students who receive a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher while completing at least three courses during the Fall 2021 semester earn the Dean's Award with Distinction.

Batavia student earns scholarship at Central College

Nicholas Reid of Batavia received the Pella Rolscreen Scholarship for the 2021-22 academic year from Central College for a high commitment to academic achievement. Reid is a member of the class of 2025 at Central in Pella, Iowa.

The Scholarship Celebration also recognized the generous alumni, parents, friends faculty and staff who support scholarships for Central students. A video was shown during the dinner highlighting Central's newest endowed scholarship. It may be accessed at central.edu/perkins-scholarship.

Batavia student finishes college at Utah State University

Tyler Nelson (from 60510) is a candidate to graduate from Utah State University with a(n) Bachelor of Science in General Studies: Natural Resources. Nelson is eligible to earn a degree from Utah State University and is among the 6,588 students eligible to receive degrees and certificates from USU's statewide campuses or USU Online. The 2022 graduating class includes graduates from summer and fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters.

Student presents research at Carthage College scholarship event

Carthage College held its annual Celebration of Scholars event on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8. Celebration of Scholars is a poster exhibition that features original research, scholarship, and creative work completed by Carthage students.

Batavia student to tour Germany and Czech Republic with the Augustana College Choir

The Augustana Choir, under the direction of Dr. Jon Hurty, will perform in Germany and the Czech Republic during a tour May 24-June 7.

Xander Thomson of Batavia, IL will join the tour as a member of the Augustana College Choir.

The choir has six musical engagements during the tour, most at historic churches such as the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, which is associated with several well-known composers such as Wagner, Mendelssohn and Bach, who is interred there.

The group also will tour Schloss Sanssouci in Potsdam, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig, the Terezin concentration camp and memorial, Prague Castle and Karlstejn Castle.

The Augustana Choir has a tradition of touring the U.S. or abroad every two years. The 2020 tour of the East Coast was canceled due to COVID-19. The choir toured in Sweden in 2018.
