Dreyer Welcomes Concussion Expert to Sports Medicine

Marc P. Hilgers, MD, PhD, FAAFP, has joined Advocate Dreyer Medical Clinic in Aurora and Batavia.

Batavia, Il - Marc P. Hilgers, MD, PhD, FAAFP, has joined the orthopaedics team at Advocate Dreyer Medical Clinic as a sports medicine physician and the Associate Director of Sports Medicine. His special interests include concussions, sports medicine, performance enhancement, injury prevention, and rehabilitation.

The American Journal of Sports Medicine recently reported that the rate of concussions in U.S. high school athletes more than doubled between 2005 and 2012. Advocate Dreyer is thrilled to bring an expert to the Fox Valley area to serve local athletes and ensure safe return to sports.

Dr. Hilgers is a certified ImPACT® consultant. ImPACT, Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing, is the state-of-the-art assessment system for concussion care and making return-to-play decisions post-injury. With Dr. Hilgers joining Dreyer’s team, this service is now available at Dreyer’s Highland and Batavia locations.

Dr. Hilgers has treated pediatric athletes as well as Olympic and professional athletes. His past experience includes titles of Assistant Team Physician for professional sports teams such as the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Cleveland Browns, as well as Head Team Physician for Orlando City Soccer and Tampa Bay University. Prior to coming to Dreyer, Dr. Hilgers was also Director of the Level One Concussion Center at Orlando Health.

Dr. Hilgers received his medical degree from Heinrich Heine University in Duesseldorf, Germany where he also trained in Anesthesiology, Orthopedic Surgery, and Internal Medicine/ Endocrinology. He completed a family medicine residency at the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend, Indiana, then progressed to complete a fellowship in Sports Medicine at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2007. Dr. Hilgers is a Fellow of the American Board of Family Medicine.
