Home Rule

Disappointed in ballot wording

I am not for Home Rule and voted against it on the Nov. 6 election ballot.

I believe the wording on the ballot was very misleading because the question was

"Shall the city of Batavia cease to be a home rule unit?"

To vote against having it you need to vote YES, because "cease" means to end.

I believe a great deal of people did not understand this question, and voted "NO" because they thought that would end Home Rule. Most of my neightborhood and others in town I have spoken to were against keeping Home Rule in Batavia.

I even called the election office to clarify the outcome and "Patch" at that time had reversed the numbers for the outcome, and then later had to correct the vote numbers. Apparently, even the author had confusion with the wording.

Why couldn't the question have said: Should Batavia keep home rule?

I believe most people in our community did not want to keep it and would love to have another vote on it-with better and understandable language!
