Kane County Sheriff Overnights In Jail To Experience Inmate Life

KANE COUNTY, IL --- It's not often that you see Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain without his police uniform, but on Wednesday he doffed his usual cop gear and sported a bright orange jumpsuit. Hain's temporary new uniform is standard issue at Kane County Jail, where the sheriff spent the night to gain insight into conditions at the jail.

The sheriff's jail cell stay comes after he received complaints from both inmates and staff about cell temperature and food quality in the correctional facility.

Hain made a Facebook post after he was released from the jail early Thursday. In it, he wrote that "comfort level was fine, considering it's a jail." He added that an inmate advised him that two blankets were sufficient to stay warm, though standard issue is only one blanket.

On the subject of food quality, Hain said he plans to work to work toward improving meals at Kane County Jail. He wrote, "Lunch and dinner weren’t bad, but breakfast and the food served to our officers needs to come up a few notches. "

Other takeaways Hain shared were that he was impressed by the "camaraderie," but that he needed to polish up his chess skills, as he was defeated by "another guy in the cellblock before lockdown."

Hain plans to make monthly stays in the jail to continue to monitor the standard of life for inmates.
