Rep. Andersson hosts Senior Spelling Bee

A competition among friends at The Holmstad retirement community

It was a friendly competition among neighbors who have a fondness for words. The Holmstad retirement community hosted and participated in the first of five Senior Spelling Bees coordinated by State Representative Steve Andersson (R-Geneva). The competition is also part of the community’s month-long celebration of Active Aging Week, an international event led by the International Council on Active Aging to celebrate aging and active living. Of the seven Holmstad residents who competed in the spelling bee, the top three are advancing to the Grand Finale Senior Spelling Bee, where they will compete against the top three senior spellers from neighboring senior living communities. Pictured with Andersson are The Holmstad’s winning spellers: First place, Inga Lind (middle); second place, Ann Rowland (right); and third place, Carolyn Hawbaker (left). Each received a Target gift certificate.

The Holmstad, a faith-based, not-for-profit continuing care retirement community, is located at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, Ill. It is administered by Covenant Retirement Communities, one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit senior services providers. Covenant Retirement Communities serves 5,000 residents at 15 retirement communities nationwide and is a ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
