Students Carry Trash With Them For Week As Part Of Science Lab

Some students found convenience in carrying a garbage bag everywhere for an entire week.

BATAVIA, IL - A group of seniors at Batavia High School had to carry their trash with them everywhere for an entire week earlier this year. That was the assignment given to those taking an AP environmental science class with teacher Daniel Renz.

Renz included the week-long lab in his curriculum five years ago, according to a Batavia High School e-newsletter, and introduced it to a new round of students in late November.

He's doing it to raise awareness of the alarming statistic that the United States generates more than 1.4 billion pounds of trash daily.
