Upcoming BHS production MAMMA MIA Celebrates Girl Power!

Did you know Friday October 11th is the International Day of the Girl? See how the cast of MAMMA MIA! celebrates Girl Power!

Friday, October 11th is the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls’ face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. Currently, the Batavia High School Drama program is deep in rehearsals for their upcoming production of MAMMA MIA! in November. This show shines a light on girls, women and the full potential for girls.

The cast includes a large number of talented and powerful young ladies (along with some talented young men as well!), who will be bringing their all to the stage in celebration of women. During rehearsals, the cast not only recite lines and practice choreography, they have deep discussions lead by Director Dominc Cattero on how the time period of the show affects women and their relationships with men, families and each other.

A few of the leading ladies were asked the question: “How do you feel the Day of the Girl relates to our show, and how does this production shine a light on girls, women and their full potential?”
Maisie Sweeney plays the role of Donna in the show. She said “To me, MAMMA MIA! is all about how women treat each other. There are choices for these characters to make: are they going to build each other up, or tear each other down? Sometimes they make the wrong choice, they pass judgement, but the show represents reality in that way. Practicing empathy is easier said than done. Donna and Sophie face difficulties in respecting each other's life choices, and it is only when they reach an understanding do they each feel empowered enough to confidently make some pretty big decisions for themselves. Day of the Girl is all about encouraging women to be unapologetic about who they are; the way we get there is by validating and supporting each other's choices, even if they are different from our own.”

Sophie Chahmirzadi plays the role of Rosie. She responded “A large part of MAMMA MIA! lies in sisterhood and finding your inner power as seen through the dynamite Dynamos and their unshakable bond, Donna’s determination as a single mother, or Sophie’s quest to find her truth. Women face so many barriers, biases, and challenges, and MAMMA MIA! demonstrates these areas and shows how girls can come together and overpower what challenges them. Throughout the process of this show, I have grown to find my voice as an artist and power as a woman to make a change.”
