10-Year-Old In Custody After Armed Standoff With Police In Beverly: Cops

A SWAT team attempted to de-escalate the situation after the child fired at officers, police said.

CHICAGO — A 10-year-old boy was taken into custody Monday in Beverly after the child fired shots inside a house and at responding police, authorities said.

Law enforcement arrived around 11:30 a.m. at the 9800 block of South Charles Street after receiving a call of a child in mental distress shooting a weapon inside a residence, according to police.

When officers reached the scene, the boy fired at them, and a SWAT team took steps to de-escalate the situation, firing bean bag rounds at the house, which did not hit the child, police said. The SWAT team then deployed a pepper spray round and the boy dropped the weapon, according to police.

The child was taken into custody and brought to a hospital for evaluation, police said.
