CHICAGO—For caregivers, behavioral changes in loved ones can prove particularly challenging. Practical strategies in response to dementia-related behaviors will be the focus of Smith Village's next Caregiver Support Group at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, at 2320 West 113th Place, Chicago.
"Dementia can cause radical changes in everyday behavior, such as anxiety, aggression, anger, suspicion and delusions," said Smith Village resident-facilitator Alice Keane, who, along with life enrichment director Bridget Murphy, will guide the discussion. "We will discuss how such behaviors can be related to triggers in the environment, which might include personal relationships."
Although the primary concern for caregivers is how to immediately respond to these changes, such behaviors can also be "a form of communication," offering insights into specific triggers. The facilitators will also look at non-medical as well as medical approaches to these behaviors, and how to recognize when additional help is needed."
The session will feature a short video prepared by the Alzheimer's Association. The video shows a four-step approach for caregivers when they encounter such actions, from detecting the cause of behaviors through reviewing each episode to better plan for the next occurrence. Both Keane and Murphy have completed the training program sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association.
As always, attendees are encouraged to ask questions and share first-person perspectives. The opportunity to support and learn from one another is a hallmark of the group. To reserve a spot, call 773-474-7302. For more information about Smith Village, visit SmithVillage.com.
