Celebrate Black History Month With Saint Xavier University

SXU is hosting events and exhibits throughout the month of February celebrating the achievements and accomplishments of African Americans.

CHICAGO – Celebrate Black History Month with the Saint Xavier University community this February. Students, staff and faculty will host a number of events and activities fostering meaningful conversations and celebrating the incredible, innovative achievements and contributions made by the Black community. Events will be held both virtually and in person.

Black History Month Library Display

All month long, the Robert and Mary Rita Stump Library will display #OwnVoice works selected by librarians, faculty, staff and students, ranging from children's books and literature to scholarly monographs.

Thursday Food Specials – February 10, 17 and 24

Each Thursday in February, the SXU Diner will offer a special food option in celebration of Black History Month. Check out the campus dining web pages for weekly lunch specials.

Securing and Managing the Bag – Thursday, February 3 and Wednesday, February 23

Attend a financial literacy program to learn about loan forgiveness and more.

Spirit Week – Monday, February 7 through Friday, February 11

Spend the week dressing in spirit gear ranging from HBCU gear to fashion from prior decades. Celebrate heritage and roots by wearing African prints, dashikis and more!

Black Down Memory Lane – Thursday, February 10

Walk through the decades, starting with the Harlem Renaissance and continuing through the start of the new millennium.

Tuesday Tea: Navigating Important Conversations with Important People – Tuesday, February 15

Discuss strategies that can be used to navigate important conversations when stakes are high and emotions are higher.

Awareness Table – Wednesday, February 16

The Counseling Center will be handing out ribbons in support of BIPOC mental wellness and providing education on ending the stigma of mental health in the BIPOC community.

Fifth Annual Convening of Black Excellence – Thursday, February 17

Participate in a networking opportunity with successful Black professionals and pioneers in the Chicagoland area.

Black History Kahoot Trivia – Saturday, February 19

Play current and past trivia and win Black History Month prizes!

Tuesday Tea: Managing Your Mindset in a Multicultural Society – Tuesday, February 22

Discuss methods and techniques to manage your mental hygiene in a multicultural society.

Diversity and Inclusion Forum – Thursday, February 24

Participate in an event focusing on student issues and challenges in the Black community.

African American Achievement Awards – Saturday, February 26

The eighth annual African American Achievement Awards will recognize the contributions and achievements of Black students, faculty and staff at SXU.

Natural Hair Care: Our Crown is Our Glory – Monday, February 28

Participate in a session to learn best practices for those with textured hair. Play hair care trivia to win hair care giveaways.

"Black History Month has always been important to me because it is a reminder of the everyday accomplishments of Black Americans,” said Ashley N. Jackson, director of Campus Life. “It is a time to pay homage to those who came before us and acknowledge the work that is happening now. I hope one day, recognition isn't limited to a month, but celebrated every day.”
