Fast Facts: The pride of Chicago’s fire and police departments get together for the fifth annual First Responder Bowl. Both come in having solid seasons in their respective leagues for this non-league affair. The CFD Blaze has won the past two First Responder Bowls, which evens the all-time series at 2-2. Last year, the Blaze put up a 37-7 win. Leading the way for the Blaze for the fourth straight year is Welsh. A former quarterback at Idaho and briefly in the NFL, he heads an offense that is led by E.J. Zbikowski, son of the team’s head coach, Ed Zbikowski. Strong was named to the University of Illinois’ All-Decade team in 2010. The biggest name on the roster, however, is former NFL defensive back Tom Zbikowski. He is in training to become a Chicago firefighter. He serves as the team’s defensive coordinator this year. The Enforcers also have a veteran offense, led by Macias. Slechter is a team captain. Atkinson, a three-year All-MAC player at Northern Illinois before a brief NFL career, anchors the defense. As a part of the event, the two teams will be honoring fallen and wounded members and families of their professions and are planning on making contributions to various charities.
