Elevator Constructors Union Taking Apprenticeship Applications

CHICAGO, IL — The International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 2 is accepting applications for apprentices. The application period opens at 12:01 p.m. June 16. Only 800 applications are being accepted through 12:01 p.m. June 29, or will end when 800 completed applications are received, whichever comes first.

Interested applicants must be at least 18 years old, and women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Applications are being processed by the National Elevator Industry Educational Program, and will be available online when the application period opens on June 16.

Other requirements include:

• Applicants must be 18, a high school graduate or have a GED.
• Each applicant shall upload with their completed applications a high school transcript or a high school diploma or official report of GED test results.
• Pass an exam designed to test the applicant’s reading, math and aptitude for employment in the elevator industry.
• Applicants will also take a tool assessment designed to assess knowledge of basic tools and their use, as well as basic measuring skills.
• Be capable of performing the physical requirements of the job.
• Upon selection pass a drug test (paid for by employer).
• A photo ID must be presented during the application process.

There is a non-refundable $25 testing fee required on TEST DAY; only money orders or bank certified checks will accepted (no cash or personal checks will be accepted). Fee waivers may be required and will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

Elevator constructors build, modernize, repair and service elevators in residential, commercial and institutional buildings, escalators, moving walkways and other conveyances. The median annual salary for a union elevator constructor is $79,480 as of May 2017.
