CHICAGO — Chicago police used home security video to track down a convicted felon currently on parole who is believed to have robbed a Mt. Greenwood resident last month. Michael Brewer, 37, is charged with armed robbery.

On Aug. 21, police said Brewer approached a resident in his drive in the 10500 block of South Maplewood Avenue. The man, later identified as Brewer, displayed a gun and demanded the resident’s wallet, debit card and cell phone, Ald. Matt O’Shea said in an email to residents.

Using video from neighbors’ doorbell cameras, license plate readers and POD cameras, Area 2 detectives were able to track Brewer’s whereabouts, police said. He was arrested and charged over the weekend.

Brewer appeared before Cook County Judge Maryam Ahmad and is being held without bond. Brewer was convicted of aggravated vehicular hijacking in 2014 and sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He was released on parole Jan. 17, 2020, having served six years of his 12-year sentence.

“This is yet another example of the need for truth in sentencing,” O’Shea said. “Had Michael Brewer served his full sentence, this horrible crime would not have occurred.”
