Mt. Greenwood Remains 4th Most Irish Neighborhood In U.S.

A recent Irish Central report shows that more than 40 percent of the neighborhood's residents have Irish ancestry.

CHICAGO — A recent look at numbers shows that Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood is still one of the most Irish places in the country.

An Irish Central report that referenced the US Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey shows that Mount Greenwood, Chicago is the neighborhood with the fourth highest percentage or Irish Americans with 40.7 percent.

The top three are Breezy Point / Rockaway Point, Queens, New York (54.3%), Point Lookout, Long Island South Shore (45.6%) and Pearl River, NY (43.4%).

Mount Greenwood is actually the only one of the top ten neighborhoods nationally that is not located in the Northeast region of the United States. Numbers 5 through 10 are all neighborhoods in Boston and Philadelphia.

All ten of the most Irish cities in the country are near the East Coast, the study also found.
