Rabid Bat Found At 99th And Leavitt

A bat that was found at 99th and Leavitt in Beverly on Monday has tested positive for rabies.

CHICAGO, IL - A bat that was found near the 9900 block of South Leavitt Street in Beverly has tested positive for rabies. The bat was determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory after it was found on Monday, according to 19th Ward Ald. Matt O'Shea.

"All residents should keep their pets on a leash when outside of their homes," O'Shea said in an email to ward residents. "If your pet does not have a current rabies vaccination, please see a licensed veterinarian immediately to have the pet inoculated with the rabies vaccine."

Also, anyone who finds a bat in the neighborhood should not handle it themselves. Call 3-1-1 immediately instead.
