RMU Welcomes New Student Artist to Painting Guild

Anna Torrise of Chicago’s Beverly area, and a graduate of Whitney Young High School, is the latest student artist to be accepted into the exclusive Painting Guild of Robert Morris University. The guild is a merit-based scholarship program for students with extraordinary artistic skills who wish to continue their avocations as artists during their college years.

Anna and her mother Michelle recently visited the RMU State Street Gallery and completed the admissions process; Anna will begin classes in September.

Art classes were always Anna’s favorite throughout her grammar and high school years.  “I’ve always loved art,” she explained.  “I often drew on my homework assignments, something that not all my teachers appreciated.”  She used her love and talent for art during high school when she participated in the All City Art, Gallery 37 and After School Matters programs.  Some of the projects included costume design and an 80 foot mural in Grant Park.

Anna’s preferred medium is watercolor and ink, and portraiture is here specialty.  She has done a lot of experimenting with pens and watercolors to determine which work best in the different ways she depicts her subjects.  As comfortable as she is with watercolors, she is looking to possibly expand into acrylics or oil.

In applying to the Painter’s Guild, Anna explained how painting is an outlet for her emotions.  “Painters make their mark on society by very literally putting all of their hopes and dreams on display.”

Classes for the fall quarter at RMU begin on September 23.  There is still time for individuals to apply as freshmen, transfer or graduate students.  Call the admissions office at 800-762-5960 or apply online at www.robertmorris.edu.
