Special Ed School Evacuated After Gas Leak

A natural gas leak at Molloy School in Morton Grove caused an evacuation of students and staff Thursday morning.

MORTON GROVE, IL -- The Julia S. Molloy Education Center in Morton Grove was evacuated for hours on Thursday after a natural gas leak was discovered by Nicor. Staff from the Niles Township District for Special Education called authorities around 9 a.m. and the decision to evacuate was made by Nicor and local first responders, according to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times. Students were evacuated by 11 a.m. and the leak was contained about two hours later.

The leak was caused by a rupture in the utility line that supplies natural gas to Molloy School, which is located near the corner of Dempster Street and Menard Avenue. Students and staff were relocated to the Muslim Community Center, where about 300 were released early from school.
