14 Hondas Targeted In Airbag Thefts On South Side

In some thefts, two people were spotted busting the windows of Hondas parked on the street and stealing the airbags inside, CPD says.

CHICAGO — Chicago police are reporting a surge in airbag thefts across three South Side police districts, including Morgan Park (022), Calumet (005) and South Chicago (004).

At least 14 Hondas have had their airbags ripped off this past week. In several of the thefts, police said two people were observed exiting a white sedan and breaking the windows of Hondas parked on the street to gain entry and steal airbags from inside. Both suspects were fully covered.

Airbags are easy to steal and hide and have become targets for thieves who steal them and resell them on the black market or on the internet. A new airbag, which retails for approximately $1,000 or more from a legitimate dealer or auto repair shop, costs from $50 to $200 on the black market, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
