Voters Come Through for Chicago High School for Ag Sciences

The school won a $100,000 grant to create an indoor riding arena.

Maggie Kendall of Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences has won $100,000 from Farmers Insurance in the Thank a Million Teachers Dream Big Challenge, and she’ll receive one of five grants awarded nationally for teachers to transform their classrooms, schools and communities.

We are so excited and we would like to thank everyone who voted and helped us spread the word!!!! We could not have done it without your help! So excited to start planning our arena design!” Kendall said on The Barn at Chicago Ag Facebook page.

Kendall will use the money to build an indoor riding arena for the school, 3857 W. 111th St., Chicago. The arena would allow the school—Chicago’s only working farm and location for an equestrian program for kids and adults with special needs—to extend the riding program year-round. Currently, students can only ride outside and, with another brutal Chicago winter in the forecast, this limits the time the students have with the specially-trained horses, Kendall said in her proposal.
