dave c., of Chicago, says: “I’m here for breakfast just about every other weekend. My wife and I and some of our friends like to stop in after running.

The food is excellent. I always have a hard time deciding between the Mexican skillet, huevos rancheros and steak and eggs.

2. Beverly Bakery & Cafe, 10528 S Western Ave., Chicago (Beverly) | 4 stars

Jason B., of Blue Island, says: “If perhaps you haven’t been to Beverly Bakery & Cafe in a while, you owe yourself a visit. They’ve certainly won me over with upgrades to the menu and service. A (late) breakfast spot on regular rotation, when I get jonesin’ for Beverly Bakery, it means I want Eggs Benedict. I’ll always grab a special if they have one, if not the Bennies on the menu are just as good. Chorizo Benny is my favorite there, with spicy chorizo smashed into a patty. You have to get it with a side of fried potatoes, these perfectly cooked spuds are the best to mop up all the gooey Benedict goodness. And the richness of the egg helps temper the sausage just right.”

3. Niko’s Breakfast Club, 4002 W 111th St., Oak Lawn | 4 Starss

Anthony S., of Denver, CO, says: “Niko’s is homey type of diner that immediately makes you feel like you’ve been coming here for 20+ years. I ordered the frittata Santa Fe which is essentially an open-faced omelette with green onion, bell pepper, avocado, cheese and bacon. It also comes with crispy fried potatoes. All of these were fantastic, but the X factor was their salsa! I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor of what seemed to be homemade salsa. It complimented my frittata so well. No matter what you’re getting I would ask for a side of that. Yummy! Side note - roosters...everywhere!”

4. Golden Griddle Pancake House, 3030 W 95th St., Evergreen Park | 3.5 Stars

Cory P., of Chicago, says: “One of my favorite places to go for breakfast any day of the week. The food is good and very reasonable. I suggest as it as [a place to] go to whenever someone ask where to go eat on the south side. The owner is very nice and the wait staff although a bit moody at times is always helpful. I will continue to frequent here.”

5. Flap-Jacks, 4710 W 95th St., Oak Lawn | 3.5 Stars

Samar S., of Oak Lawn, says: “This was our first time here and it was delicious. Oak lawn needed a classy breakfast place like flap jacks. We came in and got seated immediately. The staff was very friendly and our waiter Cano was perfect! He was friendly, patient and checked in frequently without disrupting us. So happy we stopped in today! We will be back!!!”

6. The Original Pancake House, 10437 S Western Ave., Evergreen Park | 3.5 Stars

Kate D., of Chicago, says: “You cannot go wrong with any breakfast item here. Our absolute favorite spot on the south side. Everyone is so welcoming, it feels like your family inviting you in for a weekend brunch. Get: strawberry pancakes with a hot coffee and side of bacon. Their bacon game is on point - crispy and always perfect …”

7. Skillet House, 10931 S Cicero Ave., Oak Lawn | 3.5 Stars

Breakfast C., of Oak Lawn, says: “We then had to disperse to prepare for the ending of the breakfast scout formerly known as Frank. The Skillet House was a wise choice for this outing. It was local, quick and accommodating. I found the Polish Skillet to be the perfect greasy, fatty, eggy dish that would hold me over until the reception. Frank also enjoyed his Special Skillet on his special day. Guitar Man and Moose also were pleased with their #2 Specials. The Handy Dutchman, who I think said two words this entire time, enjoyed his apple cinnamon crepes.

“The service was good, quick and unobtrusive despite the fact I was scolded for “not smiling.” Sorry, breakfast blogging is hard work. All in all, The Skillet House gets a hearty rating of 3.75 Brent faces. (Check out the breakfastrules blogspot)

8. Lumes House of Pancakes, 11601 S Western Ave., Chicago (Morgan Park) | 3.5 Stars

A. F., of Chicago, says: “Lumes is a hidden breakfast gem. I came with a large party and the hostess was very friendly and accommodating. Everyone in my party ordered something different, so I had the opportunity to taste various dishes. All were very good. The chorizo skillet was great. I’ll definitely back.”
