39 Valley View Students Honored with 'Excel' awards

Top achievers from Bolingbrook and Romeoville high schools were honored at the annual Valley View School District 365U “Those Who Excel” luncheon at Bolingbrook Golf Club Wednesday.

Hosted by the Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. James Mitchem, Those Who Excel has honored the “doers” and “achievers” in VVSD high schools since the early 1970s when several students were taken out to lunch by the school board president and district superintendent.

As the years went by, other board members and administrations joined in the annual outing to honor the young men and women who most demonstrated potential for becoming our leaders of tomorrow. The end of the year get-together has become one of the highlights of the year for students, board members and administrators.

Honored from Romeoville High School were:

●Academic Top Senior and valedictorian—Robin Czajowski, headed to Joliet Junior College, undecided on major

●Outstanding Art Student—Mary De La Fuente, headed to Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design to major in illustration

●Outstanding Band Student—Jessie Chavez, headed to University of Illinois to major in music education or geology

●Outstanding Career and Technical Education Student—Stanley “Josh” Gitogo, headed to University of Illinois to major in supply chain management and information technology

●Outstanding Choir Student—Yazmine Medina, headed to Joliet Junior College and then the University of Illinois to major in education

●Outstanding English Student—Kammeran Hughes, undecided as to which college but will major in journalism

●Outstanding Female Athlete—Skye Osborne, headed to Judson University to major in special education

●Outstanding Male Athlete—Manuel Nartey, headed to Robert Morris University to major in sports marketing or athletic training

●Outstanding Math Student—James Lefaiver, headed to University of Minnesota to major in computer science

●Outstanding MCJROTC Student—Sebastian Torres, headed to Lewis University, major undecided

●Outstanding NHS Student—Gabriella Suliga, headed to Marquette University to major in biomedicine

●Outstanding Science Student—Isabel Joyce Ruiz, headed to University of Illinois Chicago to major in computer science

●Outstanding Social Studies Student—Jada Sims, headed to University of St. Francis to major in nursing

●Outstanding Student Government Member—Casey Sturmon, headed to Illinois State University to major in biology or athletic training

●Outstanding Student Leadership Member—Dalton DeVries, headed to Columbia College-Chicago or North Carolina School of Arts to major in film

●Outstanding Student Leadership Member—Jacob Suffern, headed to Columbia College-Chicago to major in cinema

●Outstanding Spartan Spirit Principal’s Award—Rory Burt, headed to VVSD S.T.E.P.

●Outstanding World Language Student—Nathaniel Zipperich, undecided on college but will major in civil engineering
