ICYMI: 7 Bolingbrook Students Move Up To National Contest

The NAACP-sponsored contest supports kids of African descent to excel in a multitude of academic disciplines.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — Bolingbrook High School will be well represented at the National ACT-SO Competition this summer. In the month of July, in San Antonio, Texas, seven Bolingbrook students will attend the competition after winning gold medals in the DuPage County trial.

The Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics supports achievement in science, technology, engineering, math, humanities, business, and the performing, visual and culinary among black children. Impressively, they've had almost 300,000 children participate in their program.

Bolingbrook High School students won 15 medals in the DuPage County competition. Jordan Sharber, Chemistry; Cameron Sharber, Medicine and Health; and Justin Bolden, Oratory won silver medals in the county competition.

Also, "James Morrissette, Computer Science; Avia Wideman, Dramatics; Alexis Johnson, Drawing; Amber Johnson, Instrumental Contemporary; and Daiyah Reeves, Photography. Veo Taylor, Jade Harlan, and Andrew McElroy earned Honorable Mention in the respective categories of Filmmaking, Oratory, and Physics," according to the press release from the Valley View Public School District.

The ACT-SO program lasts year-round and encourages "high academic and cultural achievement among high school students of African descent," the press release says.
